Winter conditions such as cold dry wind can remove vital moisture from the skin, leaving it dry, itchy, red and cracked. Creature comforts such as hot showers or toasty warm rooms can dry out the skin even more. My recent experience is an example of winter dry skin: hot showers left me itchy and scratching. Scratching can lead to marked and hurt skin—ouch!
Here are some ideas for beating dry winter skin:
1. Use warm water instead of hot in the shower or bath.
2. Moisturize right after a shower and whenever you feel dryness or tightness.
3. Keep your room a little cooler.
4. Open a window once in a while to bring fresh air and humidity into the room.
5. At bedtime, cover chapped hands and feet with moisturizer.
As a moisturizer, I use a little olive oil. I like it because there are no chemicals, just all natural nutrition for my skin. 100% shea butter is also good. After moisturizing the dry tight skin, it feels soothed and relaxed. I am keeping this skin routine because the itchiness and scratched skin have healed.
Also, I think it makes a difference to nourish the skin from the inside out. Following The Fat Resistance Diet is a great way to do that with lots of fruit and vegetables. Healthy fats nourish the body and skin, so remember your walnuts, salmon and extra-virgin olive oil.
